Crispy Tofu


Now before you run away, hear me out! Tofu is no longer restricted to vegetarians and vegans! It is this versatile protein source that takes on the flavour of however you season it, and by gosh darn it I think I’ve found arguably the best way to prepare tofu.

Now taking a step back, tofu is just made from soybeans, nothing crazy about that, that’s what soy sauce is made from, and soy sauce is amazing. [So what’s to dislike?]

So how does tofu taste? Well like nothing really, it’s sort of like a sponge, so it’ll take on the flavours you use. When you combine it with my secret seasoning combo, it’ll taste out of this world!

My secret seasoning is simple actually; sesame oil, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder [I am very much a savoury over sweet kind of gal]! This crispy tofu will be crispy and taste EXACTLY like the flavourings listed! MMM [*cue mouthwatering-ness*].

Yup that’s all folks, that’s what it takes to make killer tofu. Okay, so there’s a few more steps, I’ll show you how!


Start with some extra firm tofu, that’ll make it nice and crispy.


Over the sink, open the packaging and rinse the block with water, pat dry with paper towel and place back onto the cutting board.



Next it’s time for the slicing and dicing. Really you can cut it however you want, this is just my favourite way. Next you want to dry it out a bit. To do this, cover it in a few sheets of paper towel and place something heavy on top for about 20-30 minutes.


Next is the fun bit, brush each one with sesame oil [I used a pastry brush], and cover in sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder. Don’t forget to flip over each piece and do the same to the other side.


Fry in a tiny bit of sesame oil over medium-medium low heat. Flip when golden brown…

…and Volia! Enjoy a thousand different ways! I dare you to try it [make that a double-dog dare!], everyone should make it a goal to try something out of your comfort-zone [not just food] every now and then – how else will you explore the vast and ever changing world around you?

Crispy Tofu


  • Extra Firm Tofu
  • Sesame Oil
  • Garlic Powder
  • Sea Salt
  • Freshly Ground Pepper


  1. Rinse, cut and dry tofu for 20-30 minutes
  2. Brush with oil and cover in garlic powder, salt and pepper
  3. Fry over medium-medium/low heat.
  4. Turn over when crispy golden brown and remove when both sides are done.
  5. Enjoy!
